13th ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP GOLF
TOURNAMENT
HSOP faculty, staff, students,
donors and guests came out to support this scholarship centered golf tournament.
GREAT NEWS!
$17,331.83 was raised for scholarships this year. Thanks to everyone who
came and participated. Even though the rains threatened and clouds grew dark, the rains miraculously
held off until the games were over, but the course was soaked from the night
before. Still one could
not detect a less-than-exuberant golfer on the course that day. Aubie showed up for the
Ball Drop contest as he has for a number of years. And we had a surprise guest
who showed up to the delight of everyone. You'll have to click the
following link to find out who, and to see photos from the golf tournament.

PHOTOS OF TAILGATE FOR AU/WV GAME
Jon Soloman, News columnist for the Birmingham News, recently ran a headline
that read: "Tigers' With Rare 4-0 Start This Season." He said, "Surviving the first
month of this college football season undefeated is akin to dodging a major car
wreck. After rubber-necking at the damage, just be thankful you're safe - for
now." This is what we Auburn folks might call bittersweet prognostication. But
there was nothing but sweet celebration at the HSOP AU/West Virginia tailgate on
September 19. The fans were expectant and hopeful, not realizing they'd soon be
looking at Auburn's more rare 5-0 start. Now the Razorbacks have stopped our
streak, but we still expect more wins ahead. Go Auburn Tigers! We'd like to share some photos from that
tailgate party with you. Thanks to CVS for sponsoring the event.

TWO HSOP STUDENT PHARMACISTS
WIN HONORS
HSOP
Student Pharmacist Somer Smith (P3) has been
selected for The RESPy Award. Somer hails from Pine Hill, AL and is one of only 10 students nationally to be
selected for this award. RESPy stands for Respect, Excellence, and Service in
Pharmacy. Pharmacy Times, in conjunction with Wal-Mart, established the national
award to honor outstanding pharmacy students who display exemplary behavior and
great potential as community pharmacist candidates. Ten RESPy award winners are chosen each
year. They are featured in Pharmacy Times magazine, and honored with their
respective colleges of pharmacy. Winners also receive a cash award and are offered a summer internship with Wal-Mart.
Congratulations Somer!

Marquita Bradshaw, P4, of Atlanta, GA, was appointed SNPhA National
Power to End Stroke Initiative Chair at the SNPhA National Conference this
summer. She will have the responsibility of overseeing and assisting 64 SNPhA
Chapters nationwide in conducting community service activities that will
increase stroke awareness and also promote lifestyle modifications such
as smoking cessation which are associated with stroke risk factors. There is a
biography posted at
http://www.snpha.org/ on the "About" tab which lists all national
officers. Marquita, you make us proud!
HSOP
STUDENT PHARMACISTS SUPPORT OUR TIGERS
Joanna Underwood, P2, recently organized a drive to get as many HSOP signatures as possible on a large poster to present to the Auburn Tigers team and their new coaches. Johanna reported that about 75 students and faculty signed the poster. Last year, she originated this idea to support Coach Tuberville and our team when they were struggling to learn the new Spread Offense. Though we all know how last season turned out, Johanna said the poster was appreciated. In fact, Coach Tuberville sent a note of thanks to the Dean. With a new start for the coaching staff and new recruits, Johanna thought it would be nice to encourage them at the beginning of their season. We concur. Thanks to Johanna for her true Auburn spirit and to all who signed the poster. Waaar Eagle & Go Big Blue!
Renew/Join
APAA Today! Aubie's job, of course, is all about giving back
to Auburn University and the Auburn community. He has made himself available to
numerous pharmacy events, including the recent Scholarship Golf Tournament. He
was all over the place, bringing smiles with the special kind of antics that
have kept Aubie at the top of the most popular mascots contest year after year.
Again this year, he bravely agreed to be hoisted by a crane so
that he could dump golf balls onto a green below for the ball drop contest. That
contest raised $977.65 for HSOP student pharmacist scholarships. Talk about
giving back! As you may have guessed, this is leading up to
asking you to give back to your school by joining the APAA. We're trying hard to
make it easier than ever to join too, because we know in these economic times
that it's not quite as easy as it used to be. That's why we have worked hard to
offer you more perks with your membership than ever before (see
http://pharmacy.auburn.edu/alumni/pdf/apaa_benefits.pdf
for a full list of benefits and explanations). Know that we won't stop either. No, we're
working to get more for you all the time. We think you deserve it. By joining APAA, you will give a helping hand to the next generation of Auburn pharmacists.
If you received a scholarship while you were in school, you know how much it
meant to you and your family. So don't delay. While you're thinking about it, complete the online form
at: (http://pharmacy.auburn.edu/alumni/apaa_form.htm).
It only takes a minute. Then give yourself a pat on the back and know how much
your school appreciates you.

Auburn pharmacy graduates:
David Darby,
'82, and Aubie, as members of the Auburn
Family, agree on a number of things. Giving back to their school is a great
example. For instance, David recently paid all expenses for a group of five
interested HSOP student pharmacists to attend the Annual Legislative Conference
in Washington, D.C. He followed that by traveling to the HSOP to deliver a
speech to the student pharmacist members of NCPA on the pros and cons of owning
a community pharmacy. He made it clear that giving back has come to be a primary
focus in his life as a successful pharmacy owner.
