Michelle L. Breland, M.Ed., NCC, is a national certified counselor pursuing a doctoral degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Auburn University. Originally from Mobile, Michelle graduated with a Bachelor of Art degree in Psychology, Summa Cum Laude with Psychology Departmental Honors, from the University of South Alabama. She earned a Master of Education in Community Agency Counseling from Auburn University. Throughout her master’s studies, she worked as a Graduate Research Assistant for Dr. Salisa Westrick in Pharmacy Care Systems; this unique opportunity allowed Michelle to gain knowledge about the profession of pharmacy, which resulted in great respect and great interest in pharmacy.

Michelle enjoys being involved in various research activities; accordingly, she is co-author of 5 publications, which includes a book chapter, two peer review publications in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association and American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, and 2 articles published by Washington Pharmacy Association and Alabama Pharmacy Association. During her graduate research assistantship, she worked with Dr. Salisa Westrick in 2 funded research studies. The first study, funded by AACP, seeks to examine factors influencing the sustainability and abandonment of immunization delivery services. The second study, funded by CDC, is to develop and implement pro-active pharmacy-based vaccination services in community pharmacies.

Michelle’s research interests include outcomes research in chronic disease management, ascertaining the impact of healthcare providers’ use of Motivational Interviewing on treatment adherence, and developing effective strategies to improve adherence.
