Jane Drake, Art Designer II, was born in Daviston, Alabama and received her BA in Art from Auburn University in 1963. Ms Drake has been employed as a graphic artist at Harrison School of Pharmacy for the past 13 plus years. The primary function of her job is layout and design for various publications and the School's Website along with a good deal of photography. "The Harrison School of Pharmacy is strongly into communicating with its constituents. Producing the Web work, the various newsletters, the HSOP Annual Report, numerous brochures and mailed pieces and making them look professional and appealing is the goal of my job," Jane says. "I also love to write and Dean Evans has allowed me the opportunity to do a lot of that for these publications. Not everyone can say what the do for a living and what they love is so much in sync. I consider myself fortunate in that regard." Ms. Drake has recently been an integral part of the creative team which has completely redesigned the School’s Website. "It was a lot of hard work, but I’ve learned so much," she says. "It’s been fun too." Since there is a need to keep current content on the new Website, Ms. Drake's job has expanded to include news gathering, which also requires more writing and "companion piece" photography. "Hardly any job, other than singing, could make me happier, " she concludes.

Ms. Drake has been a professional jazz vocalist for most of her life. Like many part-time musicians, she has worked 9 to 5 in the regular world while performing on nights and weekends. However, in the 70s and 80s, she was a full-time traveling musician. In fact, she spent approximately 15 years singing and traveling around the southeast; from Bourbon Street in New Orleans to clubs along the Florida Panhandle.

In her college days, she won the audition for band vocalist with the Auburn Knights Orchestra which actually started her musical career. This 18 piece band was organized in the 30s and gained regional fame while backing such musical greats as Frank Sinatra and Buddy Rich. Toni Tennille, of Captain and Tennille fame, is probably the band’s most well known alum. Today, Jane still sings with her old college band every August when the Knights hold their annual reunions in Auburn. In addition, she has appeared as a special guest artist with the SuperJazz Band in Birmingham, AL, at several regional high school music programs, at several AU Jazz Lab Band Concerts, at a special jazz trio performance at AU Goodwin Recital Hall and at an Auburn Arts Association sponsored jazz concert. For two years, she was a regular vocalist at The Terra Cotta, a trendy restaurant and bar in downtown Auburn with the local group Jasmine. Jane continues to perform as a jazz vocalist wherever and whenever she gets the chance.
