Tatjana Petrova is a doctoral student at the Department of Pharmacy Care Systems in the Harrison School of Pharmacy, Auburn University. She graduated from the University of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, Macedonia 11 years ago, with a degree in Pharmacy. Her first work experience started at privately-owned pharmacy where she understood the great importance of the relationship between the pharmacist and the patient, as well as the role of the pharmacist in the physician – pharmacist - patient triad. Tatjana earned her second work experience in a company that collaborated with two large pharmaceutical companies: Abbott and Becton Dickinson. She worked as a representative for sales and marketing. The work on marketing plans and sales monitoring helped her to develop a strong interest in pharmacoeconomics. Having close contact with the work of these two multinational pharmaceutical companies, she was introduced to the world of business-drug sales and production, which opened a new perspective in her professional development.

In the period from 2000-2006 she was working for the Ministry of Health of Republic of Macedonia-Health Insurance Fund. Tatjana worked for the Insurance Fund for almost 6 years, as a state inspector in the control and procurement sector.

Having the responsibility of following drug consumption and constructing the drug list for primary and secondary healthcare, and aspiring to becoming a better and more knowledgeable professional, she decided to expand her education and I enrolled in a graduate program for a specialist degree in Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Sts. Cyril and Methodius. Her focus during the specialization was in the field of rational prescription of drugs and construction of a guideline for hospital use. Tatjana`s specialist thesis topic was “Guidelines for Hospital Use”.

In 2006, Petrova became a graduate student at Auburn University. Her mentor at Auburn University is Dr. Bruce Berger. Dr. Berger’s research interests include health behavior change and improving treatment adherence. Tatjana’s current interests are in developing new roles of the pharmacist, putting an accent on the relationship between the pharmacist (health care provider) and the patient, and using motivational interviewing as a counseling technique.

Tatjana’s research focus is oriented toward the role of the pharmacist in behavioral changes and adherence to medication when counseling patients. Specifically, she is interested in increasing medication adherence in patients with chronic conditions or illnesses. Tatjana has had a strong interested in gaining practical and academic experience in administrative pharmacy.
